Sports and All That Jazz.

The RSS feed I chose from The New York Times gives a broad look on every aspect of sports. This feed, Sports, produces oodles of articles daily, too many for me to read every single one. The way in which the authors composed the articles are like I am listening to an intriguing sports report on television. The broad topics range from short reports on sporting events, biographies of athletes, deaths of famous competitors, and news of trades, returns, and scandals. At this time of the year most game summaries are on baseball, so the reports give information on who won the game and the inning-by-inning stats. Lately many articles have been on the subject of the 2008 Olympics and the athletes’ journeys. One in particular, “Women Jumping in as Elite Swim Coaches,” narrates how veteran Olympic female swimmers are now swim coaches for the 2008 Olympics. Recently, various authors composed articles on the life and death of Bobby Marcer, honoring his sporting and broadcasting achievements. Several pieces of writing were written about the possible return and trade of the recently retired quarterback, Brett Favre. In the piece, “Energized Church Confident of Return,” the left-handed hitter, Ryan Church, rejoins the New York Mets from the disabled list. Outrageously, one article notes the scandals of players being taken advantage of financially and the cheating of officials. Even though I liked being updated on all the news of the sports world, I will not keep this feed in my Reader.

Movies, Movies, Movies… Is that all?

Posted by: pondersoftheworld | July 25, 2008 | No Comment |

After browsing through the website of the New York Times, I found an RSS feed on movies. Following my subscription to this feed, I learned Movies is a great source of information on the Hollywood media. When I had 30 minutes at my disposal to read the subscription, instead of reading every single new post, I would skim and scan the headings and only read the articles that sounded familiar. The feed produces quite a few articles daily, on an average of ten. With ten articles produced daily, of course Movies had a collection of writers. The topics range from documentaries, movies reviews, television biographies, deaths and births, and financial and production news. On the side of financial news, “The Dark Knight Owns Midnight” is a one paragraph article providing information on the amount of money earned on the midnight release of the much anticipate movie, “The Dark Night”. A piece on the meeting of the Screen Actors Guild and CEOs to improve sound and dialogue is sticks out like a sour thumbs in the lists of articles with much more sensational topics. While some articles can bore a person to death, the movies reviews are quite intriguing and informative. The article, “Does Your Mother Know You Sing Abba Tunes”, is the assessment of the Broadway musical made movie, Mama Mia. With descriptive text, the author subtly bashes the movie, writing that after viewers recover from the music “hangover”, they realize just how bad the movie really was. However, some articles cover the births and deaths of future and past Hollywood legends. Angelina Jolie Gives Birth to Twins” informs the world that one of the most famous couples in the world had twins and informs the world how the news was given out. Sadly, this feed had some death news in its mist. The acclaimed actress from “Gone With the Wind”, Evelyn Keyes, is given the proper acknowledgement for her work while the readers are intrigued with the juicy scandals of the actress’s life. Giving new perspectives on the media, this feed is staying in my Reader.

Healthy Information

Posted by: pondersoftheworld | July 25, 2008 | No Comment |

From the Los Angeles Times’ Health section on the Internet, I found a very educational feed with a number of topics all relating to human health. Despite the fact that my reading schedule for the feed was sporadic, the reading sessions were enlightening. The publishing amount of those articles was many some days and only one on other days, which intertwined with my irregular reading. The approach of all the authors was to give the information without confusing readers with the jargon of literary terms or as in school lingo, the style was informative. Even so, the subjects were not just about medical breakthroughs but also public health, media myths on bodies, new warnings, and random facts of wellbeing. In “FDA Finds Salmonella Strain in Jalapeno Pepper,” the American public was warned that strands of salmonella are found in jalapeno pepper.  Fortunately one of the media myths was broken in one article with the announcement that low-fat diets are not the diets with the most weight loss, yet the low-carb Atkins diet was. Because of the scare of causing asthma, a new alert was recently issued for pregnant women not to eat nuts. One article implied that people who shop compulsively can be diagnosed as having a disorder. Who knew that shopping could be a disorder?  An effect of this diagnosis is insurance providers may have to change their services. With all this new data streaming in regularly, I will definitely keep this feed on my list.

I Agree… Mostly

Every day, every hour, and every minute someone in the cyber world is typing blogs. Gracefully composing the events of the local town, the nation, and the world and dim-wittedly and cleverly posting beliefs, counterarguments, and experiences are just two of the techniques of blogging. Along with the rest of the world, Batesville High School students having been blogging for the past year in order to complete English assignments. I chose three blogs that portray the opinions of each student on a wide scale of topics. The three blogs are eye opening to the ignorance and intelligence in today’s society.
The Dump Truck is one of the blog cites written by Megan H, a student of BHS. The knowledge and the lack of are apparent in the writings of the blogger. A post entitled “Brittney Spears: The Educator of Tomorrow?” makes the realization that the methods of teaching literature may need a makeover, giving a face lift to the literature that students are forced to find rhetoric and literary techniques in. Some suggestions for new modern works of art are music and speeches recited in television programs. Before exploring “Dirty Laundry” I only thought of working women in business suits and little black pumps working honest jobs trying to make a life for herself, but now I know of some greedy women climbing the financial ladder trying to reach the top, and when they reach the top, they fall over the end searching for more. Unfortunately straying from all the good revelations mentioned above, the author sold herself short on the topic of politics. In both “Cry Baby” and “Achieving that “Man Smell”” the argument of the former female presidential candidate being competent for the most powerful job in the world is falsely attempted. What the blogger did not see is the real candidate who shows her weakness by breaking down in front of millions, even if the motives where just to get sympathy, not because of lack of strength.
The second blog that caught my interest is iThink, a rational display of the world’s issue that has been silently overlooked written by John Michael P. In both posts, “Berkley’s Black Eye” and “Get Out of my Face”, events of people overstepping their lawful bounds to correct others on judgement-based lifestyles are eye-opening. Hearing cursive language today is not as offensive as in the past. Reading “War Over Words: F-bombs with no Explosion” brought back the realization that the horrible F-word is just that, horrible, and I need to speak up next time. Learning that Americans should not just vote on the two bases of abortion and gay marriage, but on experience, leadership, and other beliefs is what I obtained in “Clockwork Christians and Presidential Politics” and “McCain is Able; Barack is not”.
The final blog, Peeling the Layers, has the air of intellect on matters of moral beliefs. The author, Amberly G, clearly informs readers of the controversy of organ donors and presents the idea of the good of what organ donating can do in “A Dead Man’s Trash is a Dying Man’s Treasure”. In reading “Church Claims: “Heath in Hell”” a tale of one extreme church bullying celebrities because a disagreement on the actions of one dead actor, Heath Ledger, reassures that churches should try to bring members in, not scare them away. Young innocent girls idolize Hollywood’s famous young woman daily. The article “An Eye on the Idols” educated me and will others on the matter of children hoping for fakeness and of the need for real life mentors to young children. Learning, from reading “Exempt”, that other students feel the same on matters of semester tests and learning a new method of sparing hardworking students from more stress is the push all students need to fight the system on the issue of semester tests. “Wake Up” was a real hit to my heart. The thought of teens only living for the next party and quickly forgetting a friend’s death from partying is frightening. This post exhibits the ignored truth of what can and will continue to happen if nothing is done.
The three BHS students have performed great in expressing their opinions. Most of the opinions are new views of old topics that will be of good use to me in the future as I debate with others. Even though I disagree with some of the opinions, I am glad to have to opportunity to read the opinions. The bloggers and their posts really opened my eyes to the views of today’s culture and gave awareness that all citizens need new verbal ammo to act against the worldly forces of the evil.

Two’s a Match, Three’s a Crowd!

Elbert Hubbard once said “Polygamy: An endeavour to get more out of life than there is in it (Hubbard, 2008)”. When people of the male gender become the partner to numerous women, an act often referred to as polygamy, these men are attempting to obtain more “pleasure” than nature intended and the outcome is negative but not solely for the men.  The legalization of polygamous marriages in the United States would give a highway to the harmful treatment of the women and offspring (Posner, 2006).
